Patreon: 🤍 We've been meaning to follow up on our video detailing the history of Original D&D. So today, we finally continue our discussion with the history of Advanced Dungeons & Dragons, aka 1st Edition. We discuss not only some of the major changes from the previous edition but also some of the messy history that was going on behind the scenes. It involves not only corporate politics and backstabbing but also paranoia about Satanism and witchcraft. The clip that got one of the best episodes of Community banned; Advanced Dungeons and Dragons. It's a shame this was banned. As Chang clearly explains in this clip, he's dressed as a dark elf (ears included). Shirley calling it a hate crime almost instantly is what makes it so great. This is up there with some of Michael Scott's not very politically correct comments that probably wouldn't make it to TV today. I used Topaz to upscaled this clip to 4K. Enjoy! P.S. While copyright limits my clips of this show to five minutes, the entire episode can be purchased from Youtube (at the link below) and other services for $1.99. 🤍 You can also find it other places if you know where to look...
Subscribe for the coming Remedial Chaos Theory vid! Yes I know we saw Neil before, what I meant was he never had any importance when it came to narrative until this episode The best episode of the best show. Leave a like :) music by savfk: 🤍youtube.com/savfkmusic 🤍facebook.com/savfkmusic My all time favorite NBC sitcom is Community. Notorious for going over budget, so many episodes of community were shot like they were an entire movie. In fact, many episodes of community were directed by the russo brothers, you may know them for their work on movies like, oh i don’t know two of the top grossing movies of all time. And while the constant genre flipping and creative, out of the box production of community certainly made it special, to this day it is the characters that keep me coming back to the show. And that is why i can say with confidence that my favorite episode of community is not one in which there are constant special effects or cinematic angles. Actually, most of the episode is filmed in one room. The episode I’m talking about is advanced dungeons and dragons. One day dan harmon, the creator of the show who you might also know as a co creator of rick and morty, brought a crate of his old dungeons and dragons books into is writers room plopped it on the table, and begged asked his staff to help him write a story involving the the famed tabletop game. And what they came up with was actually pretty brilliant. See, for any story to be interesting, there has to be some sort of stakes. The writers’ solution? They introduce a character with declining mental health, and imply that his dungeons and dragons game with the study group has the potential to influence whether he chooses to continue living or not. And that is how they figured out how to make the outcome of a tabletop game compelling. Now it was actually kind of risky to try to get the audience to care about a character they had never seen before and had no reason to care about. But, in my opinion, they do a great job making you care about fat neil from the beginning through the narration of his backstory as well as the cast of this man who just does such a great job of looking vulnerable that you can’t help but care for the dude. Speaking of the beginning, this just happens to be the first episode I show to people when I’m trying to convince them to watch the show. That’s because I don’t necessarily think the pilot represents the show very well, but also because the narrator gives short descriptions of each character at the start of the episode, so even if you have no idea who anyone is, you’re given a great starting point for understanding the existing dynamic of the study group. If I’m a new viewer I can watch this and in 15 seconds I already know that Annie is a recovering headcase, troy is dopey, shirley is overly nice, abed is weird, britta sucks, and pierce is a dick. The show constantly satirizes different film and tv styles too, so the use of a narrator to set the stage is new, but not surprising to the returning viewer of the show. And, most importantly, it allows the writers to get the audience to care about fat neil as early on in the episode as they can, which works in their favor as it makes the conflict more compelling. After the intro, the entire episode is filmed in one location, with the exception of a couple shots of pierce in a closet. But, the writing, cinematography, and sound design all give the episode a much more expansive feel. The writing is well paced and helps to further flesh out the dynamic of the group as each group member delivers lines that further their characterization. This episode was directed by Joe Russo, who, as I mentioned before, had gone on to work on some pretty impressive projects. One might think the lack or visual effects in this episode would make it easier to direct, but I disagree. If anything, the static location and characters probably provided a greater challenge to Russo as he had to figure out a way to film the episode in a way that was still visually appealing. When the game starts the shots very simple and stationary, but as the game goes on and the stakes elevate, Russo makes the shots more dynamic as he incorporates more and more camera movement. The first time the camera really moves is when pierce shows up and the camera ominously dollies toward him. This is significant because pierces introduction to the scene further threatens neil, as well as the success of the game. The last and, in my opinion, most important piece of this episode that makes it seem larger than it is is the sound design. With every action in the game, there is a corresponding sound effect. It really helps the viewer imagine the scenarios the characters describe, and obviously the score does a great job of impacting the tone each scene is going for.

Here is a round-by-round example of an encounter under First Edition (1E) AD&D rules, based on the three core books, circa 1979. * EDIT/ERRATA: There are errors in this video. Specifically Crang's AC (AC 7) His AC should be 4 - either that or he's actually wearing studded leather or has very poor dexterity (make your pick). Another error recently pointed out to me is that Ursla missed her turn in round 3 (she should have attacked after the Minotaur's attack, before the start of round 4, according to initiative). Also pointed out by keen eyes and ears: a Minotaur typically gets +2 to damage and not "to hit" (which I have backwards here). I'm sure there are more errors missed here, but therein lies the spirit of the game! * Crang the fighter, Ursla the thief and Elda the elf fighter/magic user encounter and battle a fearsome minotaur. This play example is (nearly) by-the-book 1E AD&D combat with miniatures (although miniatures are completely optional under these rules). 1E AD&D is seen (by some) as the inevitable continuation of Original Dungeons and Dragons (aka the 1970's Brown/White Box Set, plus all the supplements) while others believe "Classic" D&D (Moldvay Basic and Cook Expert boxed sets) was truer to the spirit of the original and view AD&D as an entirely new game. Whatever you position on this, 1E AD&D became THE FRPG for a lot of hobbyist in the 1980's and it is still played and loved by many today. To learn more about AD&D visit the Dragonsfoot community. 🤍

Please Subscribe to our Channel: 🤍 Please help support the channel, here's our Patreon: 🤍 Rules Breakdown: SLA Industries 🤍 Retro RPG: Advanced Dungeons & Dragons: Second Edition: The Complete Book of Humanoids 🤍 Description: In 1987, a small team of designers at TSR led by David "Zeb" Cook began work on the second edition of the AD&D game, which would take two years to complete. In 1989, Advanced Dungeons & Dragons 2nd Edition was published, featuring new rules and character classes. By the end of its first decade, AD&D had expanded to several rulebooks, including three collections of monsters (Monster Manual, Monster Manual II, Fiend Folio), and two books governing character skills in wilderness and underground settings. Gygax had already planned a second edition for the game, which would also have been an update of the rules, incorporating the material from Unearthed Arcana, Oriental Adventures, and numerous new innovations from Dragon magazine in the Player's Handbook and Dungeon Master's Guide and would have consolidated the Monster Manual, Monster Manual II and Fiend Folio into one volume. Initially, the 2nd edition was planned to consolidate the game, but more changes were made during development, while still aiming at backwards compatibility with 1st edition. The release of AD&D 2nd Edition corresponded with important policy changes at TSR. An effort was made to remove aspects of the game which had attracted negative publicity, most notably the removal of all mention of demons and devils, although equivalent fiendish monsters were included, renamed tanar'ri and baatezu, respectively. Moving away from the moral ambiguity of the 1st edition AD&D, the TSR staff eliminated character classes and races like the assassin and the half-orc, and stressed heroic roleplaying and player teamwork. The target age of the game was also lowered, with most 2nd edition products being aimed primarily at teenagers.

Find out how Dragonlance fundamentally changed Dungeons & Dragons from breaking established Advanced Dungeons & Dragons rules and expanding on the already vast rules, bestiary and player offerings. Like, Subscribe & Click The Bell Become a Patron: 🤍 Become a Member: 🤍 Dragonlance Books: 🤍 #DragonlanceBrokeDnD #AdvancedDungeonsAndDragons #Saga #DragonLance #Krynn #HeroesOfTheLance Transcript From its inception Dragonlance was meant to infuse a story into an up-till-then, very hack and slash role-playing game. He had written a sort of manifesto on how to create more immersive adventures and that guide would serve to take both Dragonlance and Dungeons & Dragons into a whole new era. I want to dive into some game mechanics that are specific to the Dragonlance campaign, so buckle up! First and foremost, the world expanded with its module release and Novels, a first for TSR. The world would unfold and ultimately be clarified with the Dragonlance Adventures sourcebook released in September 1987. It was the fifth and final Advanced Dungeons and Dragons 1.5 edition core book! On campaign release, dragons didn’t even exist! Kind of a strange notion for a saga called Dragonlance, but the backstory explained that they were all banished in ages past. In addition to a devastating cataclysm that scarred the surface of the world and the vanishing of the gods, Krynn was a truly raw and dangerous place to start a campaign! The gods played a major role in the Dragonlance world. As the world was released, they were seemingly non existent so cleric characters couldn’t actually use any magic! It wasn’t until the end of the DL1 Dragons of Deceit adventure module that they (re)gained their abilities. That and for the first time, Clerics were actually split into alignments with their gods granting access to specific spheres of magic and special abilities. As a character you were meant to have sought out a member of the gods order and petitioned them for the right to serve the god! You only gained your abilities after acceptance by that group and the granting of your medallion of faith. Traditional magic was also controlled by gods! It was governed by alignment with access to spheres of magic like clerics and adjusted by the three moons of krynn. Depending on the lunar cycle, your magic would be more or less effective, requiring players to track the cycle of the moon, which could be an immersive experience or a pain in the tucas. For the story and role playing side of it, magic also took a physical toll on the players, the more powerful the spell, the greater the toll. Wizards were also required to be part of a fraternity called the Orders of High Sorcery, or you were considered a renegade and could be killed on sight! Alignment in the game was no longer a limit to choices for the player, but a scale that the Dungeon Master would track on behalf of the players to determine their actual alignment based on actions they took. This was a fundamental change to role-playing and yet one more task added to the already encumbered Dungeon Master. Gold had zero value. Dragonlance introduced the idea of currency being dependent on the culture or society you happen to be traveling through. Good luck keeping track of the price of ale on Krynn! Dragonlance changed some races and introduced others as playing characters as well. Tinker gnomes would end up changing and defining the race for the entire game system outside Dragonlance. Minotaurs and Irda ogres became playable for the first time, and there were variations to elves, and dwarves that hadn’t existed before. Halflings were completely transformed into Kenders who had a penchant for enraging others with insults and unconscious thievery. Draconians were the first dragon-like humanoids in Dungeons & Dragons as well. Dragonlance introduced the first form of prestige classes in the Knights of Solumnia. You would start as a Knight of the crown, and could earn your way into more powers and abilities after entry into the Knights of the Sword and Knights of the Rose orders. Tracy Hickman even redefined how Adventure Modules could be presented with pre-generated characters which were meant to be used with the module, rather than your own rolled character. This was a big shift for home games. He introduced player handouts in the form of poems and songs for the first time in D&D. Tools that brought a sense of immersion and world building till then unknown. And his approach to mapping areas to explore was innovative to say the least. Just look at Xak Tsaroth as a prime example!...
