This former flight attendant reveals what it’s like flying for both low-cost and premium airlines in Asia, “I’ve seen a lot of flight attendants spiral, there’s a lot of suicide in the industry." The only KPI that matters is your appearance, so if you have bad skin or gain weight then you’re suspended to fix those issues before stepping back onto the plane. She’s seen flight attendants resort to drug use and plastic surgery — with a colleague dying on the surgery table from getting liposuction. She’s dealt with a passenger throwing hot noodle soup at crew members, an intoxicated passenger masturbating naked in his seat, a suspected Mafia member smuggling guns onto the plane to the pressures of entertaining high-level politicians whilst the airline is turning a blind eye. All those years as a flight attendant have changed the way the Informer perceives society, she says “it’s great when you start, you’re being paid thousands to travel to all these exotic places but I just did not foresee this other side of the industry”. Having worked at Rikers jail for two years, the Informer shares the demoralizing working conditions, corruption and sexual harassment – all for just doing her job. She reveals that regular cell tours turn ugly as inmates routinely pull out their penis and masturbate over her. One incident involves an inmate forcibly ripping a colleague's duty belt off to get into her pants. Drugs, weapons and alcohol are rampant as officers are selling them for quick cash, putting the Informer’s life at risk. After trying to quit nearly four times to “stay in the fight”, she hits rock bottom and hands in her badge at a time when a mass exodus of staff were quitting too. Voluntourism is when primarily western, privileged do-gooders pay for the experience of doing charity work abroad. But according to this ex-voluntourist, the orphanage she thought she was building was actually disassembled and remade throughout the night. Not only that but children were dirtied up to make them look poorer to add to the voluntourists' experience. Children were made to sing and dance for them - and worse. We give an inside glimpse into this sham world, where people pay for the experience of charity without actually helping locals - and often even making their lives worse. “The youngest person we know and we’ve engaged with is nine years of age” We hear from an ex neo-nazi who was involved in far right organizations like the National Front, The British Nazi Party and Combat 18 for over 20 years. When faced with the choice between staying with his wife or staying with Combat 18, he chose Combat 18 because he believed he was a soldier fighting a war. Now reformed, he speaks about how these racist groups would target vulnerable young men who were being bullied at school to join their ranks and release their anger and hate on other races. 70% of grooming now happens online with many children being recruited through video games which involve shooting people from different ethnicities. Gangs are always looking for new ways to launder their money, and in cities like London, Birmingham and Manchester, using money mules has become one of their favorite methods. Young and vulnerable people are convinced by criminals, often on social media, to let them use their personal bank accounts to receive and send on their illicit earnings. However, there can be serious consequences for those who get involved, from being locked out of the financial system, to even serving time in prison. This crime is still massively under-reported, which in part is what leaves many young people so vulnerable. VICE investigates this new and booming form of crime and meets the recruiters, the police, and people who have inadvertently got caught up in it. “I have heard people murdered. I have heard people commit suicide. I have heard people walk into a room to find their children dead.” These are just some of the daily horrors that the Informer has to deal with, day in, day out. A thankless task, listening to the very worst of humanity, on 24-hour rotations, fielding up to 300 calls per shift. Having worked as a 911 operator and dispatcher for the past four years. Thos Informer knows all too well the secret reality of answering your 911 calls. He describes how the lack of modern technology means people have to be hung up on, even if they are screaming for help. Or how, they are unable to tell callers what to do, for fear of being sued - often with deadly consequences. All the while, they are not considered front-line workers, and with that, none of the protections or benefits. “We are essentially people at a front desk, according to the government - the only difference is, we listen to people die.” If you or someone you know is in crisis, call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-8255 or visit 🤍 Informer is a series where we hear the anonymised confessions and insights of people on the inside of different industries, institutions and events. “It’s an industry that rewards psychopaths.” As the global economy is potentially looking at a deep recession due to COVID-19 just after recovering from the 2008 financial crash, we hear from an ex-banker who worked in the City of London’s Square Mile from the mid-90s to 2008. He lifts the veil on the sordid world of investment banking where he enjoyed thousand-pound meals, sex parties with colleagues and £600k bonuses for “pushing around bits of paper”. He believes psychopaths in suits gamed the system while damaging society in the process. A Syrian bulldozer driver reveals the horrifying details of burying thousands in secret mass graves. The Informer is haunted by the mass graves he dug for victims killed by Bashar al-Assad’s regime. As the revolution unfolded, his municipal role changed into a military position overnight. This meant, for a year, the Informer was pushing dead bodies into large pits with his bulldozer. He recalls the stench of the bodies being so strong that he’d passed out the first time. The Informer was later arrested on flimsy charges and imprisoned under brutal conditions because “if he dies, he will die with all of his secrets and knowledge”. An ex-orangutan trafficker describes how orangutans are captured, bought and sold, the distances they travel to customers, and why there is such a demand. Hunters kill mother orangutans and steal their babies to supply to the exotic underground animal trade in Indonesia. They often travel via local bus routes, being packaged up and disguised in boxes, and transported across Indonesia. “The justice system doesn’t make sense sometimes.” The corruption of prison guards and institutional racism within the criminal justice system is a problem in many parts of the world. In this episode of Informers, an ex-convict in the UK tells us about his experiences in prison – where he witnessed drones dropping off ten ounces of weed, widespread corruption, extreme violence and what he describes as “slave labour”. Informer is a series where we hear the anonymised confessions and insights of people on the inside of different industries, institutions and events. We contacted Her Majesty's Prison Service for a response to the allegations. As of October 2020, VICE is yet to receive a reply – but will update here if we do. Child sex abuse and child pornography have always been society's darkest secrets. And the internet's growth has only made things worse. The proliferation of explicit images, live-streaming of sex shows, and online chat rooms have enabled those with salacious intent to destroy the lives of children around the world. The tide of explicit material is overwhelming, but a group of law enforcement agencies and NGOs are fighting back. VICE embeds with the officers trying to shed light on the dark corners of the web. Energy companies have secretly begun to infiltrate governments, courts and banks to ensure that society will always be powerless to stop the oil. A highly paid network of politicians, lobbyists and investors are conspiring from the shadows to block climate action, sacrificing humanity itself for short term profit. These people are the biggest threat to our planet right now and they’re winning. Under the cover of anonymity, four whistleblowers have agreed to reveal to us how these dark arts work, and how they’ve changed the fabric of reality itself in order to keep selling us fossil fuels. #Climatecrisis #Vicenews #Earthday Click here to subscribe to VICE: 🤍 Watch Next: Make the World Greta Again 🤍 Gen Z’s War on Climate Change 🤍 How I Trafficked Animals Illegally 🤍 Welcome to VICE: Enlightening commentary, authoritative advice, and unique stories you won't find anywhere else.
